Zak Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

England opener Zak Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements from skipper Stokes about the team environment not being "weak men".

Stokes made this message in multiple interviews following his team's loss in the second match of the Ashes series against the Australians earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had allowed his message to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I required," remarked Stokes.

But, following the opener made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to England were beaten in the second Test to go two matches behind.

The team afterwards went on a holiday to Noosa in the gap between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to this match, Stokes said his players had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay in contention in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman asserted the guidance from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their previous three years in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this game."

The Hosts Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal on day four came during a decisive triple-strike by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Brook and Stokes himself – left England six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional target of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia require just four more wickets on the final day to move to an insurmountable three-nil lead after three Tests.

Defeat will extend the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes loss.

The current battle is set to be decided in just 11 days of cricket – after England losing the initial matches in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," said Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it like that," he continued.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a formidable side. It was always going to be hard touring here against them. They were the front-runners coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

While Crawley's innings in the third Test probably answers questions about his short-term future in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his spot in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 in England's second innings on Saturday, adding to his modest returns against the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top order in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

However, the opener said any suggestion Pope is under the microscope comes from "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said he. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. It is talk externally. There is no discussion like that on Ollie amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
