An Generosity of Unknown Individuals: How a Man I Barely Knew Helped Me Land the Position That Changed My Life

During the closing decade of the 80s, I set out on a budget travel adventure to Europe with a companion. Because my companion was exploring pursuing a master’s degree in New York, we had planned a fortnight visit there en route to London.

We got to the postgrad residence, a large ten-floor structure on the Upper West Side named International House. After dropping our bags, we made our way to the cafeteria, where we grabbed food, sat down, and engaged in conversation with other diners.

Sitting next to me was an individual of Iraqi origin pursuing an engineering degree at an Ivy League institution. He inquired what I my profession was, and I told him that I had just graduated with a science degree and had been performing experiments using an electron microscope.

He noted that there was an microscopy facility at Columbia University – adjacent to the engineering department, which was the reason he was familiar with it. He proposed that I should apply for a job with them. I chuckled at the suggestion, saying that I was heading off to Europe and, additionally, I didn’t have a US visa.

The next day I ventured out, coming back to the dining hall that after dark. The engineering student came up to me and let me know that he had set up a meeting for me with the leader of the research team at Columbia. Because he had gone to the trouble, I went to the meeting – but immediately explained to my host that I didn’t have a visa, so I was probably wasting her time.

As is common in NYC – a city where everything seems achievable – she said: “That can be arranged. What's your start date?” I missed my plane to London.

I was employed there for a trio of years. A perk of the job was that I was granted free tuition at Columbia, and I seized the chance to earn a postgrad program in international relations.

I never saw that student again and I am unaware of his identity, but his incredible act of kindness transformed my future in so many ways. I lacked the bravery or self-belief to reach out at an prestigious college and request employment. And, I had always wanted to take classes in another country, but lacked the financial means without that tuition waiver.

Perhaps most importantly, that role at the university led me to a position in Switzerland where I got to know my wonderful partner, with whom I now have a family of four kids. This was a pivotal life event. That benevolent individual changed my trajectory in life, and I’m forever grateful.
